Why would you choose hemp, cotton, or wool string?

Updated: Mar 16

Each material has unique properties and benefits. So why would I choose hemp, cotton, or wool string? When I begin a weaving, I think about the crispness of the pattern, the softness and thickness of the band, and the overall use of the end product.

Hemp is unique in that it is incredibly strong and soft. It has an ability to wick moisture. It will get softer with use and it is a unique material to weave with. Something about my personality demands uniqueness. Which, I guess, is why I tablet weave instead of knitting or crocheting. The hemp string that I use is actually a hemp and cotton blend so it has both benefits of the hemp and cotton attributes.

Cotton string is very versatile and soft; It is also a strong string. I can find many choices of colors and thicknesses. Cotton is great for weaving letters and creating thin bands. (depth-wise).

Wool is exquisite and soft. There is a luxury feel to wool. I weave with 75% wool with a small amount of nylon. The nylon offers the strength that tablet weaving requires. 100% wool could tear if it did not have the added nylon. Wool has many color options and thicknesses, so it can be very versatile as well.

If you are thinking about making a custom request, we will discuss color and string material options so that your product is both beautiful, but also highly functional.
