What is tablet weaving?

Weaving, in general, is an ancient method of fabric construction. Specifically, tablet, or card, weaving is an ancient "technology" or weaving method to create bands, trims, and ribbons. This skill predates the loom and is found in ruins all across Europe and the Middle East. I will not get into the weeds of the history, but let's just say it is the most human and ancient art that exists beyond the early cave paintings.

Unique to tablet weaving, the warp strings, which are the vertical strings, are seen and exposed. In other weaving styles, either both the warp and weft strings, vertical and horizontal, are exposed, or solely the weft strings.

The tablets used most commonly have four holes so that four strings are tightly wound together to create an incredibly strong band. Designs are created when the strings are of different colors. With each turn of the cards, you will bring a unique set of colors to the top. When your repeat your card-turning sequence, you will repeat your pattern.

My preferred designs have a repeating vertical and horizontal symmetry. This balance is not only aesthetically beautiful, but also, the card turning sequences become a calming mindful exercise when your muscle memory takes over. It is a beautiful thing!
